What is Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator?

Estimate a freelance hourly rate by adding your chosen expense buffer to an annual income target, then dividing by annual billable hours. The calculator also shows an 8-hour day rate and a project estimate. These are planning figures, not guaranteed earnings or financial or tax advice.

Designed for accuracy, speed, and privacy, this tool runs entirely on your local device with zero network latency.

Build a freelance rate you can explain

Start with the annual income you want to support, then estimate how many hours clients will actually pay for. Calls, proposals, bookkeeping, marketing, and learning take time without always producing an invoice. Use your own recent workload rather than assuming every working hour is billable. Reduce working weeks to allow for holidays, illness, and gaps between projects.

Next, choose an expense buffer for software, equipment, insurance, and other business costs. The tool adds that percentage to your income target. It does not calculate jurisdiction-specific taxes or guarantee take-home pay. A 20% buffer is a markup on the target, not a 20% deduction from revenue; those two calculations produce different totals.

For example, an 80,000 income target with a 20% buffer gives a 96,000 annual billing target. At 25 billable hours a week for 48 weeks, you have 1,200 billable hours: the hourly estimate is 80, the eight-hour day rate is 640, and a 40-hour project is 3,200 in your chosen currency.

Treat that figure as a starting point for a quote. Define deliverables, revision rounds, payment terms, and exclusions before agreeing a fixed price. Add any contingency yourself because the project estimate only multiplies hours by the calculated rate. Compare the result with your experience, client budget, and project value; review it when your costs or available hours change.

Formula & Calculation Logic

Adds a user-selected buffer to the annual income target and divides by annual billable hours. This is a simple markup model, not a tax gross-up calculation or a market-rate prediction.

Hourly Rate = Income Target * (1 + Buffer / 100) / (Working Weeks * Billable Hours); Day Rate = Hourly Rate * 8; Project Estimate = Hourly Rate * Project Hours
